In order to fulfill the complex requirements of manufacturing microwave
tubes, TMD has a wide variety of processing services combining modern
equipment and specialist techniques, working to BS EN ISO9001 quality
standard.
We now offer these specialised services to customers from the telecommunications,
laboratory / scientific, medical, automotive and ultra high vacuum
industries.
We combine many processes under one roof, with final inspection
facilities and full traceability of materials, which is seen as
a particular advantage.
For example, a UK manufacturer approached us with the challenge
of producing a precision sub-assembly containing both metal and
ceramic components. We were able to provide a complete service in-house,
from machining the parts, through cleaning and surface treatment
to the eventual assembly of the product. The customer was quick
to report his satisfaction with the service, commenting that ‘dealing
with TMD has taken a weight off my mind. It is a quality company
delivering a quality product.’
Precision machining
We have invested substantially in modern CNC equipment and can
undertake prototype or volume projects. Components and complex assemblies
are designed in-house using the latest SDRC Ideas 3-D modeling software;
this then interfaces with the SDRC generative machining CAM software
linked directly to the CNC machines, which enables fast prototyping
with increased efficiency and cost effectiveness. Alternatively,
if required, we can work with our customers’ existing computer
files in AEGIS or DXF format.
We also have specialist expertise in unusual and difficult materials
such as high purity copper, tantalum, tungsten and molybdenum.
Chemical cleaning
We have a fully equipped modern cleaning plant capable of static
or ultrasonic cleaning by aqueous/detergent or other approved solvents,
to standards in excess of BS7773. Dry or wet abrasive cleaning is
also available as required. A wide variety of sample sizes can be
accommodated and all components are fully inspected and packed before
shipment to the customer.
Heat treatment
We have extensive experience of heat treatment in hydrogen, vacuum,
argon or air for purposes such as cleaning, de-gassing, annealing
and stress relieving. A very wide range of modern furnaces enables
many different sizes and materials to be accommodated. Both metals
and ceramics can be processed - the only limitation being certain
non-vacuum compatible materials, which may be restricted completely,
or limited to specific furnaces only.
Brazing
Brazing is a core expertise at TMD, combining initial design of
the brazed joint to ensure optimum success, design and manufacture
of the brazing jigs, and full inspection of finished product. Full
inspection includes helium leak checking and microsectioning of
samples to reveal any flaws in the joint. Metal-metal and metal-ceramic
assemblies are regularly produced, typically involving copper, stainless
steel, copper-nickel, core iron, alumina, and beryllia. Brazing
is carried out in hydrogen, forming gas (hydrogen/nitrogen) or vacuum
as appropriate, at temperatures ranging from 705 – 2000C.
We have a particular skill in providing imaginative solutions to
difficult brazing problems.
Precision Assembly
We have a fully equipped (European Standard Class 8) clean room
with a range of microscopes, laser and spot welding equipment, and
specialist hydrogen, vacuum and air furnaces for small-size components.
Waveguide Components
In support of our own amplifier production, we have recently recruited
expertise in waveguide design, manufacture and testing and are now
able to offer this service to the rest of the microwave community.
Our capability includes passive low loss rectangular and double-ridged
waveguide components, adaptors and assemblies at frequencies from
1.0 to 40.0 GHz.
